Let’s be real, organising a wedding sparkler exit in London can seem a bit daunting. Where do you start? How do you keep it safe, especially in a city with so many specific rules and regulations? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered.
For me a sparkler exit is visually stunning, creates incredible photos, and leaves you with a warm, fuzzy feeling as you head off into the night right here in the heart of London.
We have all become accustomed to the confetti photo but what if we could recreate that unforgettable moment with sparklers.
Here is your guide as a Wedding Planner in London to a perfect sparkler exit:
Some venues have restrictions on sparklers due to fire hazards. London venues, particularly those in historic buildings, may have particular restrictions due to grade listing. Always check with them before you buy anything! Also discuss where the best (and safest) spot for the exit would be. This helps with planning and ensures everyone knows where to go.
Look for sparklers specifically designed for weddings. They’re usually longer (for a longer burn time) and less smoky. Opt for at least 18-20 inch sparklers. This gives you plenty of time for photos and prevents guests from getting too close to the flames. Additionally, buy slightly more than you think you’ll need. Some will inevitably go out or get dropped.
Coordinate plans with your Photographer to agree the best location and timing – usually right before you leave the venue. They’ll need to set up lighting and get in position. Have your DJ or MC announce the sparkler exit and give clear instructions, so guests have the opportunity to gear up and join the moment. Ask your wedding planner or coordinator to help gather guests and line them up or designate to a bridesmaid or groomsman.
Have several buckets of water or sand readily available to extinguish used sparklers. This is crucial for safety. Assign a few responsible adults to supervise the exit and ensure everyone is being safe. Remind guests to hold sparklers at arm’s length and avoid waving them too close to each other or clothing. It is usually best that children do not participate in a sparkler exit.
Ensure the area is well-lit for photos. String lights or fairy lights can add a magical touch. Whilst guests are lined up the wedding couple can walk slowly through the line of sparklers, giving the photographer plenty of time to capture the moment.
Don’t forget to smile and soak it all in! This is your special send-off.
